Safaricom Airtime Not Received? Here Is What To Do

You paid and nothing arrived. This is almost always fixable, and the thing that fixes it is the M-Pesa confirmation code.

1. Check the balance properly

Dial *144# to see the airtime balance on the line. Check the recipient's line, not yours, if you were topping up someone else — this catches a surprising number of "missing" top-ups.

2. Find the M-Pesa code

Every M-Pesa payment produces a confirmation SMS with a code such as UI9OH5MD1U. That code is the single thing that identifies your payment. Without it, nobody can find your transaction; with it, anyone can.

3. Check the number you actually sent to

Read the number in the confirmation back, digit by digit. If the airtime went to a valid but wrong Safaricom line, it has been credited to a stranger and generally cannot be reversed.

4. Contact the right people

• Bought from Safaricom directly (*384*8484# or the M-PESA app): contact Safaricom customer care on 100 with your M-Pesa code.
• Bought from a dealer: send the code to their support channel. A real dealer can look up the code and either complete the delivery or refund you.

What a genuine seller does about it

Two things separate a real service from a bad one when a delivery fails. First, every payment has a code, so nothing is untraceable. Second, there is a person to reach who can act on it. If a seller cannot look up your payment, or has no way to be contacted after the money has moved, that is the actual problem — and it is worth knowing before you pay rather than after.

Delay or failure?

Airtime is delivered automatically, so a genuine delay is measured in seconds, not hours. At very busy periods it can stretch a little. If several minutes have passed with nothing on *144#, stop waiting and start with the code.
